Futatsuka Osao Kimono

Futatsuka Osao (b. 1946) was born in Toyama Prefecture, he learned textile at the Kaga Yuzen Kobo in Kanazawa City and mastered traditional Yuzen techniques, then became independent as a textile artist. He initially produced Kaga Yuzen works, but around 30 years ago he left the world of Kaga Yuzen and created his own unique world of Yuzen, with glue threads playing a central role. One of his signature techniques is “shiroage”. Among the Yuzen glue-laying techniques, he uses a technique that was popular in the mid-Edo period to make patterns appear white using the glue for masking to white out the dynamic expressions based on natural motifs such as “clouds”, “wind”, and “waterfalls”.
