Itō Sekisui V (b. 1941) specializes in mumyoi clay from his home town of Sado Island in Niigata prefecture, focusing on the power of this unique material, which is a reddish brown, ferric oxide clay extracted from gold mines native to Sado. Itō is known for neriage ware, characterized by delicate patterns and created by layering and patching clay of different brown and red tones.
