Mae Fumio (b. 1940) studied Japanese painting at Kanazawa College of Art and after graduating, he studied chinkin under his father Mae Taiho, who was a Living National Treasure in “chinkin”. He also taught art at public schools, while he worked on creating and studying techniques to hone his lacquer skills. Making use of the results of his in-depth research into chinkin swords, he creates works that make full use of various carving techniques. He effectively uses the colors of materials such as gold, silver, and platinum to enhance the decorative effect of the technique and has built a unique style with sentiment. He has also served as a judge for the exhibition, providing guidance for the exhibition, and is involved in technical education at the Ishikawa Prefectural Wajima Lacquerware Training Center, contributing to teach and train the next generation.
