Miyamoto Teiji (b. 1953) was born in Kyoto City and in 1975 he became an apprentice under Kuroda Kenkichi, learning the basics of woodworking. After moving to Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture he began exhibiting his work, winning numerous awards. Using more than 10 types of wood, including zelkova tree and oak, he makes full use of the fuki-urushi (wiped lacquer) technique, and combines traditional carpentry with spiritual symbolism in his crafts to create vessels and furniture that are warm and elegant, taking advantage of the beautiful curves of the wood grain. He was designated as a Living National Treasure in the category of wood and bamboo in 2023.
