Moriguchi Kunihiko kimono

Moriguchi Kunihiko (b. 1941) was designated a title of Living National Treasure in the field of Yuzen, in textile category, just as his father, Moriguchi Kako (1909-2008.)

Moriguchi is famous for his Yuzen Houmogi, formal kimonos for women. Kunihiko graduated from Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris in 1966 and returned to Japan to study Yuzen under his father. He also learned the technique of Maki Nori, a technique he still uses himself until this day. While his father’s work was often based on the beauty of nature, including scenes of flowers, birds, rolling hill, Kunihiko’s work is a graphical expression of geometric patterns and shapes, influenced by the pop art movement in Paris from the time he studied there.
