Murakami Ryōko (b. 1949) graduated with a degree in graphic design in 1977, then she studied under the Living National Treasure, Shimura Fukumi (b. 1924) for about five years. Murakami learned many techniques involving the Tsumugi weaving by silk threads from a hand spinning process. Dyes made from various plants and trees are also used in Murakami’s work, and combined with her art coming from her graphic design background creates her own world and signature style in the work of Tsumugi weaving.
