Nakano Koichi

Nakano Koichi (b. 1947) is a Living National Treasure in lacquer, designated for the technique of maki-e. Nakano carries out the entire process himself, from shaping the wooden base and preparing the under layers to executing the maki-e decoration. Nakano has mastered a wide range of traditional maki-e techniques at a high level, with a particular emphasis on taka-maki-e (high relief). Nakano employs original maki-e methods incorporating techniques such as raden (mother-of-pearl inlay) and eggshell inlay, achieving rich and varied expressions. By utilizing advanced lacquer techniques that further enhance the elegance of his works, Nakano continually pursues new modes of expression, creating a new world within the art of maki-e.
